New Roof Helps Prevent Maintenance Issues

The FM Roofing Shop was commissioned to re-roof Fowler Museum’s aging roof. The original roof was a built-up rock roof which had reached the end of its life expectancy. Due to wear and tear, the over 27,000 square feet of roofing proved to be a leaking problem for the occupants.

To ensure longevity, PVC single-ply roofing material was selected as it has a life expectancy of 20-30 years. The Roofing Shop first laid out 4' x 8' sheets of Dens-deck, a versatile and high-density coverboard that provides added protection and support to the single-ply roofing system. Next, a liquid adhesive was applied to enhance the bond between the Dens-deck and the roofing material. For a strong and watertight seal, the seams were heat-welded to melt the edges of the membrane together and create one continuous layer.

Initially, the project was scheduled with a completion date of November 2023. However, due to extreme rain, the Roofing Shop’s priority shifted to addressing the hundreds of leaks on and off campus. This pushed the Museum project’s completion date to March of 2024. The job was headed by Roofing Supervisor David Lamberth, Lead Randy Hill and Roofers Jorge Hernandez, Emilio Martinez, Carlos Montes and Gabriel Rodriguez.
