The Facilities Management Carpenter Shop has an in-house fire extinguisher team that is focused on the critical maintenance of the campus’ more than 8,000 fire extinguishers. Certified Fire Extinguisher Technicians Scott Hicks, Jon Wilson and Marcos Sarabia (pictured above, left to right respectively)are responsible for the equipment maintenance to ensure that each device will operate at 100% capacity in case of an emergency

Throughout the year, on a monthly basis, they inspect several types of fire extinguishers (including ABC, K, and CO2) on and off campus. During a Monthly Fire Inspection, they perform the following:

  • Confirm the extinguisher is visible, unobstructed, and in its designated location
  • Verify the locking-pin is intact and the tamper seal is unbroken
  • Examine the extinguisher for obvious physical damage, corrosion, or clogged nozzle
  • Confirm the pressure gauge or indicator is in the operable range or position, and lift the extinguisher to ensure it is still full
  • Make sure the operating instructions on the nameplate are legible and facing outward
  • Check the last professional service date on the tag. (Licensed fire extinguisher tech/contractor must have inspected the extinguishers with in the past 12 months)
  • Initial and date the back of the tag

The team’s dedication and diligence ensure preventive measures are up to date and in compliance with state/federal regulations, thereby maintaining the campus community’s safety.
