In alignment with UCLA’s climate and energy priorities, UCLA Energy Services has launched a streamlined set of Utility Customer Programs. This initiative is designed to help campus recharge customers lower energy use, reduce operational costs, and create more comfortable work environments. As regional energy rates continue to rise, these programs promote departmental agency where sustainable actions can directly create meaningful financial returns for participating in energy‑saving projects.
Programs Designed for Strong ROI and Better Daily Operations
The Utility Customer Programs provide four avenues for departments to participate in energy‑saving improvements:
- HVAC Optimization — Adjustments to HVAC schedules can reduce unnecessary runtime and generate substantial savings. Savings include rebates equal to 30% of first‑year energy savings, creating a fast, low‑effort ROI.
- LED Lighting Upgrades — Conversion of UCLA’s campus to LEDs projects a 20% reduction in annual campus electrical usage. With rebates from Facilities Management and LADWP, departments can recover their investment in five years or less, turning a routine upgrade into a long‑term savings opportunity.
- Energy Audits —Facilities Management will fund $20K for energy audits in exchange for departmental commitment to 5% energy reduction. Exceeding 10% of energy savings can earn a bonus rebate of $40K, creating a strong incentive for long‑term improvements.
- Custom Projects — Allows customers to propose unique solutions that Energy Services will tailor to fit departments operational needs.
The programs are designed to make participation straightforward and rewarding, helping recharge units reduce their energy footprint, improve operational comfort, and earn rebates that make upgrades more affordable.
The Energy Services team will be reaching out to Building Managers on a rolling basis. Please reach out to smatsumura@fm.ucla.edu to set up a meeting to discuss projects!
